Good RAID card compatible with ESXi and Solaris?

by robbyt on July 21st, 2009

After a lot of research, I found a RAID card that works with VMWare ESX/ESXi 4, has CIM support (so ESXi can read the RAID status), has a BBU (so write-cache is safe to use), and also works with Solaris x86!! The 8704EM2 from LSI:

    Hello,

I stumbled upon your post while checking RAID cards compatible with ESXi. I didn’t know the guest OS (Solaris, same in my case) was a parameter to take into account. Shouldn’t hardware be abstracted as long as guest OS are concerned? Or do you have a dual boot with Solaris as a host OS too?

    Thanks in advance,

    Tangi

  2. You are correct! Sorry if the post was unclear. The RAID card listed above works with ESXi and Solaris as a bare-metal host os. The Virtual Guest OS does not care about the actual hardware in the system.
